The Jewish quarter on the island of Ortigia is a quadrilateral bounded to the west by Via della Giudecca, to the south by Via Larga, and to the east by the sea.
It is cut by a number of parallel streets: Via dell'Olivo, Vicoli II, III, IV alla Giudecca, Vicolo dell'Arco, and Via Minniti. The
quarter has the same street layout as it did in the 15th century: low houses (one or two stories), a hospice, a charity house,
mikveh, and a synagogue (possibly where the church of San Filippo is today), call meschita (an Italian version of the
Arabic term for mosque).
The
mikveh in Casa Bianca, at no. 52, Via Alagona, is the only surviving ritual bath of three orginally
on Ortigia (the other two were under the church of San Filippo Apostolo, the site of the synagogue, and in Vicolo dell'Ulivo).
